WHY, “JOB ENLARGEMENT” IS IMPORTANT?
Job enlargement means increasing of a job role through extending the range it’s duties and responsibilities generally within the same level and periphery. Job enlargement involves combining various activities at the same level in the organization and adding them to the existing job role.
For example, an employee who will now manage own planning where it was formerly done by her or his manager.

Description
Job enlargement is a kind of job design technique where there in an increase in the number of tasks associated within the job. In other words, it means increasing the scope of one’s duties and responsibilities. This is basically increase of quantitative in nature and not qualitative at the same level.
This
is a sort of horizontal restructuring method that aims at increase in the
workforce flexibility and at the same time reducing monotony that may creep up
over a period of time. It is also known as horizontal loading of
responsibilities at the same level and not an expansion placed in vertically.
There is
no great requirement for training in this process as changes are taken place horizontally.
However, it is worthwhile to provide appropriate training especially on time
and people management. Task related training is not much important as the
person is already aware of the same or doing it for some time.

Customer
service representativeA customer service representative who handles customer inquiries and operational issues may be given the opportunity in cross selling or up selling products and services, conducting customer satisfaction surveys and assisting social media management team in the organization.
Social Media Manager
A Social Media Manager may have job enlarged to include new duties such as content creation, community engagement, social media advertising, preparing analytical reports in addition to primary duty of managing the social media account.
Nursing
officer
A nursing officer is assigned with primary
responsibility of direct patient care and with their experience level, a job
enrichment could be made such as assigning to mentoring, training nurses, conducting
patient education programs ect.
Advantages of job enlargement.

Additional task keeps employees motivated due to broadening their job scope. With new assignments employees have more activities, responsibilities and also, they get excited when organization entrust such employees.
Reduce absenteeism
Additional assignments keep employees antithetical and prevent them being absent in their regular duties.
Develop
skills
Extended work encourages employees to practice the new skills and improve their productivity. It’s a great help for them to have personal and professional development.
Reduce
boredom
Additional tasks leave employees with more activities
to do and reduces the boredom due to doing the same job repeatedly.
Increase
earning capacity
New skills resulting from job enlargement allow
employees to apply for highly paid job opportunities with increased bargaining
position.
Save
cost to the organization
This process saves short term cost of organization by
reducing the cost of recruitment and training cost.
Disadvantages
Job stress and burnout
Employees may get increased work stress and burnout whilst they feel overwhelmed by the additional responsibilities. It can result in fatigue and reduced job satisfaction.
Frustration
and decreased performance
Some employees may lack the necessary skills or expertise to handle the expanded job duties.
Resistance
to change the job role
Employees may resist to change their job role,
particularly when they are comfortable with their current responsibilities. It may
lead to show decreased morale and cooperation.
Depletion
in quality of work
Capability of employees may compromise the quality
of the work with job enlargement.
Employees may fail to maintain the required level
of excellence, if a proper consideration is not made.
Lack
of recognition
Employees could feel that their efforts are not
adequately recognized of rewarded for the additional assignments made. This
would create demotivate and sense of being undervalued.

turnover
Job enlargement could be resulted for increased turnover as employees seek roles that better align with their skills and experience.
Cost
of training
Requirement for training is created with a such an implementation as to provide necessary skills for the employees. This will be an additional cost to the organization.
